What Can Pricing do in Wireless Networks?

چکیده
Price is an long-time proved effective lever in a complicated system like human society. In such a society, people often needs to compete for a same set of limited resources. However, the demand of different people and the potential welfare generated from the usage the resource (utilization) is so different that a universal allocation scheme is unlikely to work well in large scale. Economic rules based on pricing has proved itself effective in optimizing the usage of the society’s limited resources to achieve best social and individual welfare. A communication network has a lot in common with a social society. In fact, one often denotes a society as a “network” of human being. In such a network, resources like bandwidth and spectrum are also limited. The utilization of using these resource are different. Allocating these limited resource to optimize the network operation for everybody, including users and operators, is difficult given the complexity of current network environment. Recent research on applying pricing to communication networks has shown that pricing is a viable approach in optimizing the operation of a communication network. Researchers has proposed pricing-based approach for various aspects of networks, including call admission control (CAC), Quality of Service (QoS), routing and many more. Wireless networks, in addition to these common issues, have their own specific issues that need to be addressed. In this paper, we survey some recent works on using pricing-based scheme to improve the operation of wireless technologies. Works on common issues like routing and QoS are also useful to wireless networks. However, they are not the focus of this survey. Our focus is on using pricing for wireless-specific issues, which we discuss below.

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks
With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...

A Wireless Sensor Network consists of several tiny devices which have the capability to sense and compute the environmental phenomenon. These sensor nodes are deployed in remote areas without any physical protections. A Wireless Sensor Network can have various types of anomalies due to some random deployment of nodes, obstruction and physical destructions. These anomalies can diminish the sensi...

Energy consumption is considered as a critical issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Batteries of sensor nodes have limited power supply which in turn limits services and applications that can be supported by them. An efcient solution to improve energy consumption and even trafc in WSNs is Data Aggregation (DA) that can reduce the number of transmissions. Two main challenges for DA are: (i)...

متن کاملLEBRP - A Lightweight and Energy Balancing Routing Protocol for Energy-Constrained Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
A wireless ad hoc network typically refers to any set of wireless networks where all devices have equal status on a network and are free to associate with any other wireless ad hoc network devices in their range. As the nature of these networks, they commonly do not have external power supplies, and each node has a limited internal power source. In this paper, we put forward a new routing proto...
